Belsassar is a three part song off the album Drawing Lines by Eth Eonel. It was originally written in 1989 as three songs, called The Old Beario, Mama Teld Her Hello [sic] and Hipsie Holy. These songs were recorded as demos back then under the name Jak-Ulv. Written at the same time and being similar in rhythm (all in 3/4) and feel (all folk-inspired tunes), they fit nicely together.

Originally The Old Beario had new lyrics written on April 28, 2004, was renamed Starfish Underneath, and had new parts written for it, called Old and Heartless. This suite, with Old, Starfish Underneath and Heartless (in that order) was first called One, then renamed Belsassar in 2009, until Old and Heartless in 2010 was taken out to be included on See Through Mirrors (2003-2004), where it fits chronologically. Mama Teld Her Hello and Hipsie Holy was added to the suite with their new titles, Mother and Decades.

The part called Starfish Underneath gave name to Eth's studio, until he, in 2009, renamed both the studio and the label Eonel Sound.

Some new lyrics were written between February 21 and 28, 2010, and the demo was finished late June 2010.

Lyrics

[Starfish Underneath]

You have to learn how to swim, if you want to be a star-
fish. Watch out for the current, and don’t swim too far,
fish. The shallow is safe and your name is Belsassar.

You are shaking your head, heading towards the rainbow.
But when you are dragged down by the undertow,
you will find that this part was extremely apropos.

The stars will shine, although set apart
And with the speed of light, time will tick tock your heart
Generations will fade but you wont be alone
When the fish have all died and the oceans have grown

Hey, Belsassar, you have the way to be seen
Your sky is sea blue and your garden is green
Now can you remember to always be true
Cause you are the only one fit to be you

So wash away the writing in the sand
Leaving no trace of the disembodied hand
Gold and silver, brass, iron, wood and stone
To feast on our own

You read it and wept, you were always one to cry
To answer to answers, but never ask why
Your book has been burnt and your fate is to die

You are shaking your head, heading towards the rainbow.
But when you are dragged down by the undertow,
you will find that this part was extremely apropos.

For a fixed point in time
A strange situation
You handle with sinking in reason and rhyme
Then you are and I'm up for the climb

You have to learn how to swim, if you want to be a star-
fish. Watch out for the current, and don’t swim too far,
fish. The shallow is safe and your name is Belsassar.
The shallow is safe and your name is Belsassar.

[Mother]

Are you on the way
to the place you commited the crime,
in the footsteps of a loving
and caring mother time?
With the now in hand
A driving force
Passive as
it plots the course

She will lead you there
with motherly care
Erase all fear
Then you'll comprehend,
understand
that mother always knows

She knows what you need
and she knows what you're gonna do

Mother always knows
Mother always knows
Mother always knows

[Decades]

Time did form me
Count one, two, three
Decades wondering why

Centuries will
Remember you still
Repeat, reveal the lie

Decade one
I remember
