78-9 Exultation Wave Ensemble, or just 78-9 (pronounced seventyeight nine) for short, started as a side project off of the band Aloysius, with vocalist/keyboardist Eth Eonel and bassist Erik Eriksen. They came together to record more experimental and extreme music than they did in Aloysius. In February 2005 they met at Erik's place to write and record a few songs. Eth Eonel, who came up with the strange project name, also thought out a concept for their first album, tentatively called "Paradigm Shit". Two songs were written and demoed, called Prologue and From World To Void, with lyrics by Eth Eonel and music by both.

In 2006 the project went on hiatus until both Erik and Eth have released their solo albums.
